Teaching Calm Greetings: Reba’s Puppies Master Manding

One of the sweetest moments in puppy raising is watching little ones learn how to interact with people politely and calmly. In our latest video, you’ll see Reba’s puppies demonstrating beautiful manding—a foundational skill that teaches puppies to sit patiently and wait for attention rather than jumping up or demanding it.

As I sat next to their pen and called them over, these little Golden Retriever babies eagerly responded, coming to me and sitting nicely as they waited for pets. This behavior is something we reinforce daily, helping the puppies develop self-control and polite manners from an early age. Teaching puppies to offer calm behavior naturally fosters a more balanced temperament, making them wonderful companions as they grow.

You may notice that Olive isn’t in the video—she’s spending some time in Dolly’s pen. With 18 puppies to care for, we occasionally shift a few pups between litters to help balance the workload for the mommas. This ensures that each puppy gets the care, attention, and nourishment they need while also giving the moms a more manageable nursing routine.

Why do we focus on manding? This skill lays the foundation for polite greetings and helps prevent common behaviors like jumping up on people. Instead of reinforcing excitable behaviors, we reward calmness, helping puppies grow into well-mannered, gentle adult dogs. It’s a small but powerful step in raising well-socialized Golden Retrievers who are ready to join their new families with great manners already in place.

Stay tuned for more updates on our puppies as their personalities continue to shine. Each day brings new discoveries, and we love sharing these special moments with you!
