Puppy Update: Building Balance & Confidence with Motion Training

SDG Goldens

Updated: Mar 15

At SDG Goldens, we’re always looking for ways to help our puppies grow into well-adjusted, confident companions. This week, we introduced two new tools to their enrichment pen: a swing and a wobble board! These simple additions are fun for the puppies, but more importantly, they play a big role in their neurological and physical development.

Why Motion Training Matters

Many dogs experience motion sickness, especially as puppies, because their vestibular system (which controls balance) is still developing. By gently exposing them to different types of movement early on, we help their brains and bodies adapt to motion, reducing the chances of car sickness and building resilience for future experiences like riding in cars, boats, or even working as service dogs.

The Swing: A Soothing Challenge

We added a small puppy-safe swing to their pen, and the results have been adorable! Some puppies were naturally curious, hopping on and enjoying the gentle rocking, while others needed a little encouragement. Over time, even the more hesitant pups have started exploring, learning how to stabilize themselves and enjoy the movement. This helps with:

✅ Vestibular development – Strengthening their balance system.

✅ Confidence building – Teaching them to adapt to new sensations.

✅ Reduced motion sickness – Helping their bodies adjust to movement early on.

The Wobble Board: A Fun Balance Workout

The wobble board is another fantastic tool for coordination and strength. As the puppies step on it, it moves slightly, encouraging them to shift their weight and engage their core muscles to stay steady. This type of training is great for:

🐾 Strengthening muscles and joints – A strong body is a healthy body!

🐾 Proprioception – Helping them understand where their body is in space.

🐾 Early problem-solving skills – Figuring out how to navigate new experiences.

A Confident Future Awaits

By exposing our puppies to these experiences early on, we’re setting them up for success in their future homes. Whether they’ll be family companions, service dogs, or therapy dogs, these early life experiences make a huge difference in how they handle new environments.

We love watching our puppies grow, explore, and develop into well-rounded little adventurers. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue shaping the best possible start for our SDG Goldens pups!
