Puppy Training Update: The Box Game & Building Confident Learners
Updated: Mar 8
At SDG Goldens, we believe in shaping confident, problem-solving puppies through fun, engaging training methods. One of the best ways to encourage puppies to think, explore, and develop their learning skills is through The Box Game—a simple yet powerful exercise that helps build their foundation for operant learning. Yesterday, we introduced The Box Game to our puppies, and it was incredible to watch them process, explore, and start making connections!
What is The Box Game?
The Box Game is a shaping exercise that encourages puppies to interact with an object (in this case, a box) and get rewarded for their actions. There are no lures or commands—the puppies are in charge of figuring out what earns them a reward. Every time a puppy interacts with the box in any way—sniffing it, stepping in, pawing at it—we mark the behavior with a click and reward. This simple game helps puppies:
✅ Develop problem-solving skills
✅ Build confidence in trying new things
✅ Learn that their actions influence outcomes (operant learning)
✅ Increase focus and engagement in training
Puppies’ First Reactions to The Box Game
At first, the puppies were naturally curious but unsure. Some sniffed around it, while others sat and watched, waiting for a cue. But as soon as the first puppy got rewarded for touching the box, the wheels started turning! It was amazing to see their little minds at work. By the end of each of their sessions, most of the puppies were engaging with the box in some way, showing increased confidence and curiosity.
Why The Box Game Matters
At this age, puppies are developing their understanding of the world. By playing shaping games like this, we’re not just teaching them “tricks”—we’re helping them think, problem-solve, and engage with training in a positive way. These early lessons lay the groundwork for everything from basic obedience to therapy work, service training, and beyond. And the best part? The puppies love it! Watching them figure things out and gain confidence in their actions is such a rewarding experience.
