Inside the Puppy Pen – Day 37

Recently, our adult dogs have started coming in to spend time with the puppies, and it has been such an important part of their learning process. We always make sure that only safe, trustworthy dogs interact with the puppies, because these early lessons carry a big influence on how the puppies will play and socialize as they grow.

Loretta, though just a year old herself, has been doing a wonderful job. She’ll gently paw and play as the puppies come up to her, showing them how to interact without being overwhelming. Reba has also been coming in and doing a great job, though I haven’t managed to catch her on video yet.

Adult dogs bring something to the puppy pen that littermates simply can’t provide. They teach the boundaries of appropriate play, demonstrate gentleness, and model how to respond calmly in new situations. Puppies are naturally observant, and when they watch an older dog approach with confidence and composure, they begin to pick up those same behaviors.

This kind of exposure helps the puppies grow into well-rounded companions who understand not just how to interact with other puppies, but how to communicate and play politely with dogs of all ages. It’s one more layer of socialization that we value deeply here, because it helps set the stage for a lifetime of positive interactions.

💡 Tip for Families:

When you bring your puppy home, remember that interactions with older dogs should always be supervised and gentle. Choose calm, balanced adult dogs for those first introductions, and keep sessions short and positive. Just like here in the puppy pen, the presence of a well-mannered older dog can go a long way in teaching your puppy how to play appropriately and build confidence in social settings.
