Inside the Puppy Pen: Day 22 – Momma’s New Feeding Style

Updated: Aug 22, 2025

Today momma started sitting to feed her puppies! This little shift is more than just a new position — it’s a sign of how much the puppies are growing and changing.

When puppies are first born, they can only nurse while momma is lying down, since their legs and necks aren’t strong enough to hold them steady. But now, at three weeks, they’re sturdier on their feet and can stretch up to reach her even while she sits. Before too long, she’ll even start feeding them while standing — another step that encourages strength, balance, and independence.

This is also the stage when puppies begin transitioning toward solid foods. In the next week or so, they’ll get to try their first taste of “puppy mush,” a soft mixture that’s easy for them to lap up. We’ll also start introducing some fresh, raw foods in small amounts to support their gut biome and broaden their diet. As their nursing sessions shorten and change in style, they’ll be ready to explore new tastes and textures.

It’s such a joy to watch momma guide them through these changes — each adjustment she makes helps prepare her puppies for the big, exciting world that’s waiting just ahead.
