🐾Beginning Litter Box Training! 🐶 (January 2025 litters)

Our Birdie & Tree litters have officially reached 3 weeks old, and that means it’s time to introduce an

important new step—litter box training! 🎉

At this age, puppies are becoming more mobile and naturally start leaving their sleeping area to potty. This is the perfect time to introduce a designated potty space to help set them up for success!

🌟 Why Start Litter Box Training at 3 Weeks?

🐾 Encourages Clean Sleeping Areas – Puppies instinctively don’t want to soil their bedding, so introducing a litter box helps them learn to potty in the right place.

🐾 Makes Housebreaking Easier – Early litter box training teaches them surface preference (where they should potty), making the transition to outdoor potty training much smoother for their future families!

🐾 Supports Natural Development – Around this age, puppies naturally start moving away from their sleeping area to relieve themselves. The litter box provides a structured way to encourage that instinct.

🛠 How We Introduce Litter Box Training

✨ Setting Up the Box – We use a shallow litter tray filled with pellets (like Timothy or Alfalfa pellets) that mimics natural outdoor textures.

✨ Gradual Introduction – At first, the puppies may step in and sniff around, and that’s totally normal! As they start using it naturally, we gently encourage them by placing them in the litter box after waking up and after nursing.

✨ Keeping It Clean – Puppies are much more likely to use the litter box if it's clean, so we make sure to scoop it regularly to reinforce good habits.

✨ Positive Reinforcement – Puppies learn best through experience, so as they begin using the litter box correctly, they gain confidence in their new potty routine.

🐶 What to Expect in the First Few Days?

✔ Some puppies will catch on quickly, while others may take a little longer.✔ A few curious sniffers and diggers—totally normal at this stage!✔ Occasional accidents outside the box (that’s okay, they’re learning!).

🐾 What’s Next?

As they continue to grow, they will get better at choosing the litter box on their own, and by the time they go home, they will have a solid understanding of potty routines, making housebreaking much easier!
