The Best Dog Food for Golden Retrievers:

Updated: Jul 21

Golden Retrievers are known for their intelligence, affectionate nature, and stunning coats. To maintain their health and well-being, choosing the right dog food is essential. At SDG Goldens, we are committed to providing the best nutrition for our puppies and adult dogs, which is why we carefully select a diet that meets WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association). We are always observing and adjusting to what our dogs do best on. You may notice that we switch up what we feed from time to time, and that’s very intentional. Different dogs have different needs, and even those needs can change over time. Right now, we’re using Hill’s Science Diet Large Breed Puppy Lamb Meal & Brown Rice Recipe for our puppies, and it’s been a great fit. We also like to rotate our adult dogs’ food occasionally to make sure they’re getting a wide range of nutrients. But no matter what we’re using, we always stick with one of the WSAVA-compliant brands.

Why Diet Matters for Golden Retrievers

Golden Retrievers are prone to certain health issues, including hip dysplasia, obesity, heart disease, and allergies. Feeding a high-quality, nutritionally balanced diet can help prevent these problems and support their growth, joint health, and coat condition. We strongly advocate for WSAVA-compliant diets, as these brands follow strict nutritional guidelines and extensive scientific research to formulate their recipes. WSAVA-compliant brands ensure transparency, quality control, and veterinary oversight in pet nutrition.

Why WSAVA Compliance Matters

There’s a lot of marketing hype in the pet food world. Grain-free, boutique, raw—so many trends can seem appealing at first glance, but not all of them are backed by actual nutritional science. In fact, some of these diets have been linked to serious health concerns like dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).

That’s why we recommend sticking with a WSAVA-compliant brand, especially during those important growth stages in the first two years of a dog’s life. These brands put the health and safety of your dog above trends or fads.

Some of our favorite WSAVA-compliant dog food brands include:

  • Hill’s Science Diet

  • Purina Pro Plan

  • Royal Canin

  • Eukanuba

  • Iams

We don’t require our puppy families to stick to one specific brand, but we do encourage you to stay with one of the WSAVA-approved options—especially while your pup is still growing.

Why We Currently Use Science Diet for Our Puppies

One reason we’ve recently chosen Hill’s Science Diet Large Breed Puppy Lamb Meal & Brown Rice Recipe for our puppies is because of Golden Retrievers’ tendency to develop food sensitivities—especially to chicken. For a long time, we made sure our puppies had chicken in every meal early on, thinking that early exposure might help. But what we’ve learned is that consistently feeding just one protein source, like chicken, too early and too often can actually increase the chance of developing sensitivities later in life.

By starting our puppies on a different protein source, like lamb, we’re helping to reduce the risk of these sensitivities and keeping their diets more balanced from the start. Later on, we may introduce chicken gradually, but not as a daily staple in those early weeks.

In addition to offering an alternative protein, we appreciate several other things about Science Diet:

  • It’s formulated by a team of over 200 veterinarians, food scientists, and nutritionists.

  • It supports joint and bone health, which is critical for large breeds like Goldens.

  • The kibble is made with high-quality, easily digestible ingredients, which is great for growing puppies with sensitive stomachs.

  • It includes a precise blend of antioxidants and vitamins to support a strong immune system.

Overall, Science Diet provides reliable, research-backed nutrition with options that meet the unique needs of Golden Retriever puppies—making it a solid choice for our puppies.

Dry Food vs. Wet Food: What We Prefer

We always recommend sticking with dry dog food as the main source of nutrition. One thing we’ve noticed over the years is that dogs who get mostly wet food—or even just food that’s moistened down—tend to need dental cleanings more often. Kibble helps scrape off plaque as they chew, which can really help keep teeth healthier in the long run.

That said, we do like to mix in toppers from time to time—things like over-easy eggs, plain yogurt, pumpkin, or even liver as a treat. Just remember, these are treats, not meals. The majority of your dog’s nutrition should come from their balanced dry food.

Thinking About a Raw Diet? Read This First.

Some owners ask about raw diets. While it’s true that a well-balanced raw diet can offer some benefits like high protein and fewer preservatives, it also comes with some serious risks. If not done correctly, raw diets can lead to nutritional deficiencies or expose your dog to harmful bacteria like Salmonella or E. coli.

If you’re thinking about going the raw route, make sure you’re working closely with a veterinary nutritionist to get it right. For most families, a trusted WSAVA-compliant dry kibble is a much safer and easier way to give your dog everything they need.

How to Switch Dog Foods Safely

Whether you're switching to a new food or transitioning your puppy into adult formulas, always take it slow to avoid tummy troubles. Here’s a simple 7-day transition plan:

  • Days 1-2: 75% old food, 25% new food

  • Days 3-4: 50/50 mix

  • Days 5-6: 25% old food, 75% new food

  • Day 7: 100% new food

Slow and steady wins the race when it comes to switching diets.

Final Thoughts

Feeding your Golden Retriever a balanced, high-quality diet is one of the best things you can do for their health, development, and longevity. Stick with WSAVA-approved foods, keep their diet primarily dry kibble, and don’t be afraid to add some variety with occasional healthy toppers. And if you ever have questions about what’s best for your pup, we’re always happy to help.
