Male vs. Female Golden Retrievers: Which Is Right for You?

Updated: Feb 26

Golden Retrievers are one of the most beloved dog breeds in the world, known for their friendly

temperament, intelligence, and loyalty. If you're considering bringing one into your home, you might be wondering: Should I get a male or a female Golden Retriever? While both genders share many of the same wonderful qualities, there are some key differences that could influence your decision.

Physical Differences

  • Size: Male Golden Retrievers tend to be larger than females. On average, males weigh between 65-75 pounds, while females typically weigh 55-65 pounds.

  • Height: Males are usually 22-24 inches tall, while females are slightly shorter at 20-23.5 inches.

  • Build: Males tend to have a broader head and more muscular build, whereas females often have a sleeker, more refined appearance.

Temperament & Personality

Golden Retrievers are known for their friendly, affectionate nature, regardless of gender. However, there are some general personality traits that tend to be more common in males versus females.

Male Golden Retrievers

✔ More affectionate – Males are often more outgoing and attached to their owners. They tend to seek constant attention and affection.

✔ More playful – They often retain their puppy-like playfulness longer than females.

✔ Slower to mature – Males can take longer to grow out of their energetic puppy stage, sometimes behaving like puppies well into adulthood. However, with our English bloodlines, we tend to have very calm puppies in both the males and the females.

✔ More social with strangers and other pets – They typically enjoy interacting with everyone they meet.

Female Golden Retrievers

✔ More independent – Females are often more reserved in their affection and may enjoy alone time more than males.

✔ Easier to train – They tend to mature faster, making them more focused and less distracted during training.

✔ More protective – Females sometimes display stronger protective instincts, especially towards their families.

✔ Less clingy – While still very loving, females may not be as “needy” as males.

Training & Behavior Differences

Both male and female Golden Retrievers are highly intelligent and eager to please, making them easy to train. However, due to their slower maturity, males may require more patience and consistency in training (especially in more active bloodlines). Females, on the other hand, may be easier to house-train and learn commands more quickly.

Key Training Considerations:

  • Males may get distracted more easily, especially when they are younger.

  • Females may be more receptive to structured training routines.

  • Males may show more excitement when meeting new people, requiring extra training in impulse control.

  • Unneutered males may be more likely to mark territory if not trained early.

Health & Medical Considerations

Both male and female Golden Retrievers are prone to similar health conditions, including hip dysplasia, heart disease, and cancer. However, there are some gender-specific health concerns to consider:

Males:

  • More prone to testicular cancer (if not neutered).

  • Higher risk of prostate issues in older age.

  • If not neutered, may exhibit territorial marking or dominance behaviors.

Females:

  • If not spayed, they will go into heat twice a year, which can be inconvenient for some owners.

  • Higher risk of mammary tumors and uterine infections (pyometra) if not spayed.

  • Spaying before they are fully grown can significantly increase the risk of hip dysplasia.

Which Gender Is Better for Families?

Both male and female Golden Retrievers make wonderful family pets, but the right choice depends on your family's lifestyle and preferences.

  • If you want a goofy, playful, attention-loving dog, a male may be a great fit.

  • If you prefer a more independent, mature, and possibly easier-to-train dog, a female may be a better choice.

  • If you have children, both genders are equally affectionate and gentle, making either a great companion.

  • With our English Cream Goldens, we have seen a wide variety of personalities across both sexes. Our most laid-back, easygoing dog has been our male, while our absolute sweetest, most affectionate dog has been one of our females. This goes to show that while general tendencies exist, you can find similar personalities in both males and females, making it more about the individual puppy rather than just gender.

Final Thoughts

There is no right or wrong choice when it comes to picking between a male or female Golden Retriever. Both have amazing qualities that make them wonderful pets. The decision should be based on your lifestyle, training commitment, and personal preferences. Regardless of gender, a well-trained and well-socialized Golden Retriever will bring endless joy and love to your home! Are you thinking about getting a Golden Retriever?
