Inside the Puppy Pen, Day 42

Today was Puppy Party day.

At six weeks old, we host a structured Puppy Party as part of our Puppy Culture program. It is one of my favorite milestone days because it blends intentional exposure, thoughtful observation, and a whole lot of wagging tails.

We set up four obstacle stations:

• A teeter totter

• A bridge

• A tunnel

• A wobble board

Each station offers a brand new experience. Moving surfaces. Slight elevation. Shifting balance. Narrow spaces. Nothing forced. Nothing pressured.

The puppies are simply rewarded for interacting.

A sniff. A step forward. A paw on the board. Walking across the bridge. Exploring the tunnel. Every interaction is met with encouragement. The goal is not formal training. It is positive exposure and confidence building.

One of the most important parts of Puppy Party is that I step back.

We invite new people to come work the stations. That means the puppies are experiencing unfamiliar faces, new voices, and different handling styles while navigating something novel. They are learning that new people and new challenges can still be safe and rewarding.

That matters.

This day gives us valuable insight into each puppy’s developing personality. We get to observe:

• Who confidently approaches something new

• Who pauses, evaluates, and then proceeds thoughtfully

• Who seeks out human connection first

• Who quickly understands how to navigate a moving surface

We are not labeling or limiting anyone. We are simply gathering information. When looking at long term potential for therapy or service work, early confidence and adaptability are encouraging traits. Puppy Party gives us one more meaningful data point in that bigger picture.

More than anything, this day builds resilience.

It teaches puppies that when something feels a little different under their feet, they can move forward. When they meet someone new, good things still happen. When they try, they are rewarded.

These small experiences add up to confident, capable puppies who are ready to continue learning as they grow.
