Today the puppies reached an exciting milestone with their very first meal of mush.
First meals are often a messy affair, with puppies diving in, walking through bowls, and wearing more food than they eat. Today was a little different. This group approached the experience gently, and overall, they ate surprisingly cleanly for a first meal.
Each puppy explored the bowl at their own pace, lapping thoughtfully and staying mostly focused on the food rather than the chaos that sometimes comes with this stage. While there was still some exploration and curiosity, the process was calm and orderly compared to many first mush meals we have seen.
This could be due to the smaller group size, or it may simply reflect the gentle nature of this litter. Either way, it was a sweet and encouraging moment to witness. After the meal, they naturally cleaned one another up, reinforcing those early social behaviors that begin developing right in the puppy pen.
First mush meals are about exposure, not volume. Today’s meal was a successful introduction to a new texture, a new routine, and another small step toward independence.
