1. Eyes and Ears Fully Open:
By two weeks old, most puppies have their eyes open, but by Day 16, they’re beginning to really see and hear the world around them. Their vision is still a little blurry, but they’re starting to respond to light, shadows, and sounds.
2. Building Strength and Coordination:
Their front legs are getting stronger, and they’re starting to lift their bellies off the ground for a few steps at a time. It’s an important stage between “army crawling” and walking!
3. Discovering Their Voices:
We have been hearing tiny squeaks, grunts, and the beginnings of little barks. Puppies are finding their voices as their awareness grows.
4. Growing Fast:
By this age, many puppies have doubled—or even tripled—their birth weight! Their little round tummies show just how well mama’s milk is doing its job.
5. Developing Personal Awareness:
While personalities are still forming, puppies are starting to recognize familiar scents—like their littermates, their mama, and even us humans.
6. Early Handling Matters:
This is a wonderful window for gentle handling and Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) to support strong, confident development.
7. Transitional Stage:
They’re leaving the “neonatal” phase and entering the “transitional period,” which lasts until about 3 weeks old. Every day now brings something new—more movement, more sound, more curiosity.
