Inside the Puppy Pen - Day 10

Day 10 is a quiet but very important point in early puppy development. While the puppies still look much like they did a few days ago, their bodies and nervous systems are preparing for some major changes that are just around the corner.

At day 10, the puppies’ eyes and ears are still closed. However, we are right on the verge of them beginning to open. Over the next few days, we will start to see the very corners of the eyes opening first, often just a small slit at the inner corner. Vision at this stage will still be extremely limited and blurry, but it marks the beginning of a big developmental transition.

Shortly after the eyes begin to open, the ear canals will start to open as well. Hearing comes online gradually, and early sounds are muffled and unclear. This is why we continue to keep the environment calm and predictable. Their brains are just beginning to process new sensory input.

Even though big milestones are approaching, these puppies are still firmly in the neonatal stage. Their primary needs remain nursing, sleeping, warmth, and safety. Most of their energy is devoted to growth and internal development rather than interacting with the world around them.

They spend the vast majority of their time asleep, which is critical for healthy brain development and nervous system maturation.

At this stage, scent remains their most developed and reliable sense. The puppies use their noses to locate mom, find milk, and orient themselves in the pen. Even with eyes and ears closed, they can respond immediately when mom enters by wiggling and moving toward her. This reliance on scent is a key reason early neurological and scent-based work later on has such a powerful impact.

Handling at day 10 remains minimal and purposeful. Interactions are short, calm, and supportive. This stage is not about stimulation or training. It is about regulation, safety, and building a foundation for confident, stable temperaments in the weeks ahead.
