Inside the Puppy Pen: Day 1

Updated: Dec 30, 2025

The puppies have all settled in well during their first full day of life. Day one is a big transition for newborns as they move from the constant environment of the womb to regulating everything on their own. During these first 24 hours, nearly all of a puppy’s energy is directed toward staying warm, resting, and taking in nourishment.

Newborn puppies are born without the ability to regulate their body temperature, so close contact with mom and littermates is essential. You will often see them piled together, shifting frequently, and repositioning as they learn how to stay warm and comfortable. This movement is normal and important for circulation and muscle development.

Their digestive systems are just beginning to function, and the first day is critical for supporting hydration and gut health. Sleep dominates most of the day, with short periods of activity in between. At this stage, puppies are completely dependent on their dam and have not yet opened their eyes or ears. The world they experience is primarily warmth, touch, and scent.

Over the next few days, we will continue to monitor weight, hydration, and overall comfort while allowing mom to do the majority of the work she is designed to do. Day one is quiet, foundational, and exactly what we hope to see.
